Your chat file never leaves your device

This is the part that matters most, so it comes first. When you select a WhatsApp export, the file is read by the page itself, inside your browser. It is not uploaded, transmitted, copied to a server, or stored by us. There is no server behind Scrollback that could receive it.

You can verify this yourself: open the site, switch your device to aeroplane mode, and then select your chat file. The story is still built in full, with no internet connection.

When you close or reload the page, the chat is gone from memory. If you leave the page mid-story, a copy of the finished story — not the original chat file — is kept in your own browser's local storage for up to six hours so you can pick up where you left off. It stays on your device and is removed when it expires or when you start a different chat.

Shared story links

If you create a link to send your story to someone, the story is compressed into the part of the web address after the # symbol. Browsers never transmit that part to a server, so the story travels inside the link itself rather than through us. Anyone who has that link can read that story, so only send it to people you intend to.

What the site does collect

Scrollback itself collects no personal information and asks for no account, name or email. The following third parties receive limited data when you visit:

• Microsoft Clarity — usage analytics: pages viewed, clicks, scrolling, approximate location by country, browser and device type, and session recordings. The screens that display your story are explicitly masked, so your messages do not appear in any recording. Clarity sets cookies on your device for this purpose.
• GitHub Pages, which hosts the site, receives standard server request information including your IP address.
• Our payment provider, if you choose to pay. They collect and process your payment details under their own privacy policy. We never see or store your card or bank details.

Retention

We hold no database of users and therefore retain nothing about you ourselves. Analytics data is retained by Microsoft Clarity under its own retention schedule. Payment records are retained by our payment provider as their regulations require.

Children

Scrollback is not intended for children under 18 without the consent of a parent or guardian.

Your rights

Because we hold no account data, there is usually nothing for us to retrieve, correct or delete. If you have contacted us by email, you can ask us to delete that correspondence at any time. You may also clear your own browser's storage to remove any saved story.

Changes

If this policy changes, the updated version will appear on this page with a new date at the top.
